My iPhone 3GS video recording/uploading experiment

As you may or may not know the new iPhone 3GS has a video camera that records at a full 30fps. Inside the camera application it also has a dedicated button for uploading to YouTube, provided you have a YouTube account.

So the other night I met up with Rob at the 10-stair on 63rd and Broadway. With no intentions of skating it "for real" or for clips or whatever, Rob just went up to the top and 180'd it straight away. I captured it with my iPhone and hit the "Upload to YouTube" button.

Rob and I walked to our vehicles, got in and discussed where to actually go skating. I pulled out my phone to check the publishing status and found it already available on my YouTube page! Before we even left the parking lot! I have to say that is a pretty bad-ass feature to have on a phone. It completely ups the ante for getting the "first!" status of a new spot or trick. I wonder how much of this we will see in the near future.

(Trevor's?) New Montage

Some local kids doin' it up...

Good stuff dudes.

On a side note, I used to hang out at the Beauty Bar in Austin a couple years ago and they would play this song ALLLLLL the time and all the chicks loved it and would dance their tits off. Sooo, maybe not the best choice for a skate montage but hey, to each his own.

The Footy Tape: Part 1

Wayyy back when this is how we logged our footage. When I say "we" I mean myself and T Bird Two Bit Terry. Everytime we came home with clips, we immediately copied them to a VHS tape via VCR. We didn't have computers with Final Cut Pro or anything. So any slow-mo you see is straight from the cam to the tape!

Anyway, for better or worse it's going up. In chronological order, no music, no image/audio correction, no labels, just "The Footy Tape." But I'm doing it in segments.

It's hard to remember the actual year that most of this went down. I'm pretty sure that the first clip in this first segment is the very first trick I filmed with my Digi8 camera that I got for my birthday in 1999, because I remember filming the festivities of 2000's New Years Parties.

Most of this is footage that I compiled into the 1st ever unofficial TDS Video. It was edited straight from cam to VCR, with a soundtrack and everything. I only made one copy which I gave to Micah Friedman for his (13th? 14th?) birthday. It is now lost. But I still have MOST of the clips on...The Footy Tape.

Points of interest: Lens cap scraping the ground, bucket hats, pickup truck graphics, DC shoes, The Nuge's cackle, the tennis court in Nompton before there was a skatepark, TBird's sweatpants, pre-hippie Micah Friedman in a green suit, and The Dirt.

Locals Only Sesh

Terry, Rob, and I went to Local's only yesterday on a tip from the ConRAD. He was there skatin' and shit so we went to join him. After awhile Big B arrived on the scene with Bobby and this other guy, I don't know his name but he rips. Blah blah blah, footy footy footy...

Please Welcome Our Newest Member...

T-Rent.
aka Tee Billy Stilly.
aka Trent Still.

Whatever you know him as, he's definitely a character.
Cheers T-Rent!!!

In other news I've added a video of outtakes from Go Skateboarding Day 2008.  It's just some clips I shot with my Digi Elph so don't get excited.  But Gary's drop-in attempts are pretty awesome, even if they are just attempts.  And Preston executed a couple of beautiful jump-and-grabs.

And lastly, about the whole drunk-clown-for-hire business, I never got any word from the employer, so I can't keep you informed of the outcome.  But I'm sure it will be epic.  Maybe.

Diggin' In The Crates: Park Footy

It is what it is. Park footy. Some believe that you shouldn't ever put park footy in a real video part. I however think it's okay. But only if it's something that couldn't be duplicated in the streets. You know? Whatever. Anyway, here's a bunch of park footy I had chillin' on my hard drive. Some of it is up to 5 years old I'm guessing. And some was filmed a few months ago.

As far as filming credits go, I'll say half the footy was mine and the other half was a combination of Jayosh and Tim Clark's filming. Some of it's been in other montages. Some of it sucks. I don't really give a shit. Watch it if you like. And enjoy the badass song. Who can tell me what it is? Break out the iPhone apps!

Also, please note my new layout of the video page. I tried to make it a little simpler. Let me know if there's any glitch's or broken links, kay? Thanks.

Whatever Happened To......

Chad-to-fakie?  Does anyone remember him?

Well, I'm trying out this program I got called MPEG Streamclip, which converts my digi-cam movies into Quicktime clips real quick-like.  It's pretty bad-ass so far and here's an example. I converted this from some fucked up 320x240 .avi that won't play properly on my Mac to a full-size 720x480 raw edit QT clip that's only 7 Mbs.

And it's Chad-to-fakie.  That's why I was wondering if anyone remembered him...
video
by the way, that clip is super old, like at least 3? or 4? years old?
Anyway, that's pretty good right there.  I don't ever see anyone at the park hucking half-cabs like that down the bank to this day.

More to come...

He said what? No more video?

I've noticed lately that there's lots of kids around the OKC with cameras filming for videos and whatnot.  Some pretty tight crews roaming the streets these days.  I keep noticing local spots in montages that I've never seen before.  This never used to be the case, we used to know all the spots in all the 'hoods from North to South, East to West.

Well, like 'ol Dylan used to say, the times they are a'changin.  And with all these new up-and-comers uhhh, up and coming, I've come to a decision.  I'm no longer making another TDS skateboard video.  That's right, you heard it here first.  Actually this is probably the only place you'll hear it. Regardless, that's the deal. It brings a tear to my eye, but a smile to my heart to know that I don't have to deal with this anymore.

Baker Has A Deathwish!!! Aaahhhhhhh!!!

Well, the fuckin' Baker has a Deathwish Tour is coming to OKC today. I'm going to the demo with Billy and and the BandiTT, which is kind of gay, but fuck it. Their team is sick. But seriously, I'm 29 and Billy and BJ are over 30, so at some point it becomes kind of fucked that 30 year old men are going to go watch someone skate. At this age you really don't give two shits about watching anyone skate, it's all about just doing the skating yourself. Oh well, I've said it before and I'll say it again: Fuck it.

I can't wait to go up to Andrew Reynolds and be like,
"Hey man, remember when you came to OKC with Kirchart, Appleyard and Lenoce back in the Birdhouse days? Remember the party me and my friends had at our house and we bought a keg and you guys got to experience some of the weirdness that is Oklahoma City? And remember how that one dude from Bootleg was Birdhouse team manager at the time? Before you guys all started the Baker Bootleg thing? What was his name? Oh yeah, J. Strickland, that's right. Remember that? That was cool huh?"

I also can't wait to go up Dustin Dollin and be like,
"Hey man, remember when you came to OKC with Bam Margera and Jaya Bonderov on a Volcom tour? This was like way before you were even pro. Remember how we skated my friend Gabe's mini-ramp in his backyard and Bam showed us that videotape of weird footage that would eventually evolve into the CKY video? And remember how I lived with those two chicks and we let the band that you guys were touring with play a show in our living room? What was that band? Oh yeah, the Line, that's right. And remember how Lance Dawes was there too and him and Bam were running around my house pretending to be pro wrestlers while the band was playing? That shit was pretty funny huh? Yeah man, cool. So do you remember me or what?"

I can't think of anymore potential pros/victims for my "Remember when" attacks, I don't think I've met...oh wait.

I can't wait to go up to Jim Greco and be like "Hey man, remember when you and Reynolds and Willy Santos and whoever the fuck else came to OKC like a super-duper long time ago, and you guys did a demo at Boards and Blades, and you were just a normal looking dude with baggy pants and like a curly afro or some shit? Remember when you were standing there waiting to go and I was like, 'hey man what's up' and you were like 'hey dude what's up' and then you went and did a 5-0 grind or something? You remember that right? So what's up with Johnny Thunders? You like him or something?"

Just kidding I would never say shit like that. But it made me laugh when I was typing it.

And I could keep going on because I remember a bunch more things but I'm over this post already. I'm sure you are too. Good day.

Ardmore Regional SK8 Park

I was fortunate enough to take a journey to Ardmore, Oklahoma last weekend, where they have recently built a cement park. Not sure who designed it, but it's pretty good. Some weird pieces here and there, that's what I like. Sick of that cookie-cutter shit. Anyway, who cares about that.

At one point I'm chillin' in the parking lot with a tallboy because it's 97 degrees outside and I saw one of the locals walking across the parking lot towards the skatepark. And he was yelling "Heyyyyy Mommm, where's Grandmaaaaaa?!!!" I thought that was hilarious.

Here's Drew's clips from that day.

Therm's Belated Birthday Video

The infamous El Thermo turned 30 a little while back. In that skateboarding world, that's kind of old. So it wouldn't surprise me if  people were wondering, "Is El Thermo still ripping? He's fuckin' old." Yes, yes he is.

Well I took a bunch of clips that won't go in the new video (which may never come out) and put them together so the wonderers can see what Jeremy has been doing the past few years. And since these are just the old and/or throwaway clips, it should be apparent that he's still killing it.

In case you forgot, all these videos are on the video page so you don't have to scroll through these damned entries looking for an older one.  Later.

The White Devil?

The BandiTT has been seen skateboarding recently, I have this grainy surveillance video to prove it.

video

In case you didn't know, someONE or someTHING chooses the still image for the thumbnail on the movie clips. Look at the one they chose for BJ's clip. Who in God's name thought that frame  looked best? It looks like he's working out, doing windmills or something. Sorry BJ, I would picked something better.

Get Donkk!

Behold The Donk! Here it is for all to see. This is the skateboard I did for the Arockalypse Anniversary Deck Art Show. I think it turned out pretty well, when it's on the ground it totally resembles a donked-out car with those wheels. Anyway, there was a whole bunch of decks there painted by random artists, tattoo artists and skaters. I think Terry, Conrad, Michael and Jeff were the only other skaters to do decks and theirs were awesome. The others were cool, but whatever. Mine was the only one that was rideable, so that means I WIN! Yeah!

I'm back, baby!

Back in the Annual IAO film and video screening, that is. I submitted a video to them this year and it will be screened at the event. It is a video of clips from the OG Ashtray spot and the last Bridge Spot we built. So if you're around next Saturday, go check it out. It's free. There will also be some other independent film/video's, and there is usually some pretty good ones from all genres. Don't be a lazy bastard and blow it off to play video games. Oh yeah, and just so you know the last one I entered won first place. That's what's up! Peace.

Arockalypse Contest and New Spot Mega-Post!!!

The Arockalypse One-Year Anniversary Skate Contest & Art Show went down this past Saturday. Jayosh, Terry, Mitch, JG, Gabriel and Myself journeyed to Edmond to get some of the action. Here's how it went:

Tee-Rent was the Master of Ceremonies, he's always good at that sort of thing.
Preston Cheek won the high-ollie contest at something around 38 inches. That's not him in the photo however. Dang!

There were a few Bud Lights floating around to quench the thirst of anyone over 21, especially  dirty bearded bikers with pink and green shades. This dirty bearded bider just so happens to be a spokesman for the Alternative Thumb Team of America.  A-T-T-A!!!

Grant was in attendance, shralping the bowls and looking after Damien. It looks to me like Grant is attempting to rep the ATTA. I'm not sure if his thumbs are alternative enough to be considered for membership. We'll have to look into this...

The OG's were out today, baby!!! Another homie for many a year, Huss was at the park refreshing himself with his flawless tre-flips.  I remember seeing him huck a tre-flip over the metal grate at Chase Plaza downtown, with a big 'ol pager on his hip. This was like, at least 10 years ago. Youngsters better act like ya know.

Stony Phillips was there being positive, cruisin the 'crete and flexin' on kooks while donning the proper t-shirt for the occasion. He and Tee-Rent bulk up for the camera. I wouldn't fuck with either of these dudes. For real.

We abandoned the contest before it was over, but I heard Vert-Gary and Kevin Keef took top honors in Best Trick. Way to go dudes. Much to my envy Gabe rode his bike to the next spot while we all rode in cars.

The new hot-spot is located right on a picturesque golf-course in a pretty nice neighborhood. There is clearly No Trespassing, but every citizen we ran across seemed to enjoy our presence. Go figure. I'm holding a dirty slipper that was lying near the sign, possibly a clue that someone else who trespassed there wasn't as lucky as we were.

Here is a panoramic view of the scene. Nice and relaxing.

Terry adds some phallic symbolism to an otherwise already-strange image.

These idiots were pretty drunk and convinced one of their buddies he could still skate...

...in his socks. He couldn't even push. Sorry kook, back to the golf-cart you go.

Here's Two-Bit's take on the scene:

Keep in mind while you're here you'll want to have cash handy when the golf course refreshments cart cruises by. Beers are $2.30 each, they got water & sodas too. The Ditch offers It all & is pretty much perfect. Go there on a nice day and you'll get the pleasure of interacting with the local golfers. The locals accepted us and gave up some beers in our good spirits. I'd say, "This spot's got potential."

You said it, T.

All in all, a pretty damned good day for us all, even though I got sunburnt really bad. Poor me.

And now for what you've really been waiting for, some footy. I put together a short mini-video from the golf course spot. Gabe Friedman, Jayosh and Terry are the skater-boarders. Enjoy. (like the others, this video will be permanantly located on the video page as well. Okay? Okay. You're welcome.)

Homeward-bound,  Terry uses his multi-tasking abilities to light a cigarette, text someone and choose a tune while driving. Simply amazing.

Arockalypse Now? No, Saturday dummy!

Don't forget about this thingy going on this Saturday, April 19th.  Some contests are going down at Edmond Park, then there's a skateboard art show at the shop at 7 o'clock. Word on the streets is that my deck is the bitch-slappin' best there is.  Don't even think about missing it.

Sunday with El Thermo

Photobucket
So today is Sunday. Today, we shred. My phone rang at 11. A nice surprise from the usual 8 or 9 o'clock wake up call coming from my mom wanting to meet for breakfast. Even better, it was OG triple OG El Termo calling from every body's favorite place - beautiful South side Oklahoma City. Our conversation was brief, we decided on where to go and thought a cruz at the Edmond park sounded best. Now with a crew assembled consisting of Therm, Mitch, Kepner & myself, we're ready to roll. It's a degree or two in the 60's and the wind was slightly just enough to let slide. Off we go. Oh, and i forgot to mention - Therm said he'd drive. "what?" ahhh, yesss! Time to get Hyped. Time for Bingers! What this means is...(Were roll'n 'A team' style instead of my no gas have'n, no knee room, cramped up ugly corolla)..now we'll be Roll'n in the Gnarliest '77 Chevy Shag'n Wagon around. (this thing has a deathwish) Let the Good times roll.

Photobucket
Anyways, Needless to say, we got there in no time at all. The park greeted us with Cold wind and tons of kids in the "my first time" stage of - bike, skate, scooter, heely, and every other extreme sports toy sold. Fun right? yeah, right. We skated it, and turns out it was actually ok. The sesh got better when our homie Stoney Philips showed up. Stoney, you're the man. It's always bad ass to run into you. Always fun that guy. Anyways, I had a good game of skate going with Therm when i strained my hamstring doing a frontside flip. I know, weird way to hurt yourself, but when you're old shit happens. Yeah, so now I'm sideline status, & am now heading to lounge it out back in the van. Soon the heads assembled for departure and 86 was the number.
Photobucket
On the way back to the city, we stopped by the newly not totally finished mini bowl at a near indoor TF called Altered Skates. Some of the homies worked there and joined in on a sesh with us. Thanks Robi.
The Fella's were shred'n the bowl so i figured i was gonna hang back and chillout in the van. I started to observe things, i decided that i was in major need of some new shoes. Major bummer man. You know that feeling you get when your shoes feel just perfectly right every trick you try, well, that's what these feel like. It's gonna be hard to part with these fuckers but these things are just about done. Anthony Van Englewatever, you sir, made a dope skate shoe.

Rank Ass Cheeseburger

Today I googled the word "Cheeseburger". I went through 17 pages hoping I would see this site but alas no, I did not. This may have something to do with the fact that I have never really written about Cheeseburgers. My original intent was to review Cheeseburgers I've eaten and make recommendations. I guess I will have to step it up a notch or two.

I also googled the phrase "Oklahoma Skateboarding". I was a little happier to find that Cheeseburger Supreme shows up at number 13. But 13 is not good enough, damn it! We need the Number One Spot! I'm not stopping until we get there. Skateboarding here in Oklahoma has always been a bit of a challenge, but we have buckled down in the face of diversity and charged forward, never refusing to skate shitty spots in the gale-force winds that plague our flat, dry little piece of the United States we call Oklahoma.

I have to say, I just cheered myself up with that wonderfully uplifting sentence. Keep on keepin' on, you loyal Oklahoma Skateboarders!
